In the last post, I discussed what functional medicine is. In this post, I will discuss a case that was presented with a 34-year-old female patient who had classical metabolic syndrome.
What is then Metabolic syndrome? Below is the definition of “Metabolic Syndrome” by the American Heart Association.
“Metabolic syndrome” presents a group of risk factors that raises the risk of heart disease, diabetes, stroke, and other health problems. It is diagnosed when any three of the following five risk factors are present:
- High blood glucose (sugar)
- Low levels of HDL (“good”) cholesterol in the blood
- High levels of triglycerides in the blood
- Large waist circumference or “apple-shaped” body
- High blood pressure
- Obesity (Not all but a high percentage of them are present with it)
Metabolic syndrome is a serious health condition. 34% of Americans are known to have this condition and it is becoming more prevalent. There are many facets of the causes of this condition such as socioeconomic influences, lifestyle choices just to name a few. But the main causes of this condition are a highly refined and industrialized diet with processed foods, large consumption of refined carbohydrates, trans fats, saturated animal fat, stress eating habit with uncontrolled daily stresses. The consequence of these habits often leads also to adrenal dysfunction, liver, and cardiovascular problems. The symptoms may include obesity, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, pre-diabetic/diabetic findings that are also detectable via a blood test. Most of these people would be put on pharmaceutical agents/medications such as statin/anti-cholesterol, blood sugar lowering, and/or blood pressure-lowering medications that usually come with numerous side effects. But there are other natural options available that are as effective without the side effects. As to why conventional medicine doesn’t offer is another discussion. I will probably touch base on that in future blogs!
In this blog, I will briefly present a patient’s condition before starting the care and how she improved after the care. I will also briefly discuss what regimen she had to go through. I will delve into more details about what you can do to help on your own in future blogs.
Symptoms presented
constant body/joint aches (mostly in the low back, neck, upper back)
Headaches
fatigue
acid reflux
strong history of Lupus in the family
Blood test findings
high triglycerides – 187
low HDL – 39
low vitamin D level – 19.30
low protein – 6.3 (indicating gastric inflammation)
low globulin – 2.0 indicating gastric inflammation)
high C-reactive Protein – 2.69 (indicating systemic/cardiovascular inflammation)
Vitals
weight – 172 LBs
blood pressure – 160/92
With the findings listed above, she was put on a modified paleo diet with restriction of industrial/processed foods and sugar with a few other high probable food sensitivity causing foods. She was also put on natural nutraceutical supports; vitamin D, omega 3, a plant sterol, pre/probiotics, vitamin c to name a few.
The followings are the results after 3 months of the regimen.
triglycerides – 90 (down 87)
HDL – 49 (up 10)
vitamin D level – 44.8 (in normal clinical range)
low protein – 7.0
low globulin – 2.5
high C-reactive Protein – 2.03
She also improved in symptoms. Fatigue, acid reflux, blood pressure, and body/joint pain have noticeably improved as the gastric and inflammation markers have improved.
Her weight after 3 months was 151 Lbs with a healthy normal blood pressure of 116/70!
In the next post, I will try to share another successful case of metabolic syndrome case.
