LEAKY GUT SYNDROME!
Those symptoms such as migraine headaches, body/joint aches, fatigue, digestive troubles can be isolated or incidental symptoms. However, some cases, more often than not, might be related to Leaky Gut Syndrome. Leaky Gut Syndrome is known to affect millions of people worldwide with chronic debilitating symptoms and yet often goes undiagnosed.
Leaky Gut Syndrome has also been linked to causing chronic conditions such as Celiac disease (intolerant to Gluten; a protein found in some grains), Multiple Sclerosis, Fibromyalgia, Autism, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, Irritable Bowel Syndrome, Eczema, Dermatitis, Ulcerative Colitis, and many other debilitating inflammatory autoimmune disorders.
Considering SAD (Standard American Diet) that is filled with potential food groups likely to cause these troubles adds more probability to the population who may suffer from this.
The following illustration depicts how this process affects our body and its function.
When the digestive tract mucosa is inflamed, the tight junction of the intestinal mucosa is compromised as they become widened and permeable to large, undigested compounds, toxins, and bacteria. The intestinal immune system then reacts against these large compounds, promoting an exaggerated immune response. This creates a cycle of further intestinal inflammation and greater loss of intestinal barrier integrity.
As the intestinal tract becomes inflamed from the diet, lifestyle, medications, infections, etc., it causes further intestinal inflammation, feeding this cycle promoted by intestinal permeability. After the intestinal mucosa becomes damaged, the damaged cells are unable to properly digest food and produce the enzymes necessary for digestion. This leads to MALNUTRITION; further intestinal inflammation; further permeability; the development of food sensitivities, bacteria, and yeast overgrowth; and impaired intestinal immune integrity. These self-promoting cycles become difficult to unwind unless aggressive dietary and lifestyle strategies are employed.
The followings are the potential causes and symptoms of Leaky Gut Syndrome
Common Causes of the leaky gut syndrome
- Heavy Metal Toxicity
- Nutritional Deficiencies
- The use of certain medications:
– Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) such as aspirin, ibuprofen, naproxen, and others
– Prednisone (a synthetic steroid)
– Broad-spectrum antibiotics
– Birth control pill - Toxic pesticide residues, inhaled chemicals, and environmental toxins
- An excess of refined sugar in the diet
- Infection with fungi such as yeast (Candida), parasites, or bacteria such as H. pylori
- Chronic stress
- Food allergies
- Excessive caffeine, alcohol, and/or tobacco use
- Sluggish liver – toxic overload from the liver affects the gut and increases the permeability
- Thick blood
- Deficiency in digestive enzymes or hydrochloric acid in the stomach
Common Symptoms of Leaky Gut Syndrome
The general symptoms of Leaky Gut Syndrome may involve one or more of the following; gastrointestinal complaints, neurological disturbances, respiratory troubles, autoimmune responses.
- chronic fatigue
- depression, anxiety, poor memory, mood swing, brain fog
- asthma
- food allergies
- chronic sinusitis
- eczema, rashes, and other skin problems
- headaches
- migraines
- irritable bowel syndrome
- inflammatory bowel disease
- constipation, diarrhea
- Candida, frequent infections
- fibromyalgia
- joint pain, muscle aches
- arthritis
- autoimmune disease
The general recommendation for Leaky Gut syndrome is to stay with a natural raw food diet as possible including vegetables and fruits that are antimicrobial in nature and avoid chemical/processed foods. It is also important to check if one has any food allergies against any particular food items such as gluten, dairy products.
Our clinic offers functional nutrition services that include assessment of your overall metabolic process and find out what is causing the symptoms using lab tests such as blood test, urine, and saliva test.
Once the problem is located, we intervene with a variety of options including lifestyle modification with a certain diet plan, natural/herbal supplementation, continuing metabolic assessment with educations that supports your lifestyle changes, acupuncture treatments, and much more.
These options of care provide the means to get to the bottom of your conditions and symptoms that ensure much health in the future instead of merely addressing the symptom relief with conventional medications.
