There is so much concern and debate out there for the new variant.
But it appears that there is little data to provide evidence as to how infectious and deadly it is. While anticipating there will be a lot more valuable and accurate ones in the future, I would like to share this study for now, instead of relying on someone else’s opinion without substantial scientific support.
Here Is The Data!
We all are bombarded with the news every day about the renewed concerns about the delta variant that seems to be more highly transmissible and more deadly.
But is it true? How about the vaccination? Is it working?
How deadly can it be?
We still have a lot of questions and the fear that comes along with the lack of data. So, I like to share the most recent study from the UK. It shows more appealing data and numbers where we don’t have to guess around. This study shows the trends of the activities of the variants and the impact on the population. But it is not conclusive in anyways as the virus will continue to mutate along with our immunity against it. This research was conducted and published by “Public Health England” from October 2020 to June 2021. This study may likely continue as they find more information and come up with more statistics in the future.
There are the links below for those who like to check and read the study!
But to make the long story short, see the numbers below according to the results of the research yourself!
The death rate/fatality rate (from October 1, 2020, to June 7, 2021) has been reported as following;
- Alpha variant – 1.9%
- Beta variant – 1.4%
- Delta variant – 0.2%
This data is located on page 11 of the study with the link below. As the data shows above, the delta variant appears more transmissible (see page 20 for comparison in cumulative cases as of July 5, 2021) and readily spread. But the death/fatality rate did not appear as proportionally as the infectious rate, at least so far.
But here are some interesting findings for the death rate between vaccinated and unvaccinated;
For the subject age group under 50, the death rate from the delta variant was higher among the unvaccinated than the vaccinated. However, for the subject age group over 50, the death rate was higher among the vaccinated than the unvaccinated. The occurrence and hospitalization rate also showed consistency as the death/fatality rate in both age groups. This data is shown on pages 16-17 of the study with the link below. While they may not have the definitive reasoning behind this, that is what the study shows.
But the overall death rate/fatality rate of the delta variant is much lower than the previous variants as shown above.

There are still so many different opinions, debates, and confusion out there. But the studies and research such as this one continue to come out, we shall be in a much better position to understand the virus and communicate with each other without being confused.
While I don’t have any information behind England’s controversial decision to re-open and lift all restrictions, the decision may have been made due to the lower death/fatality rate. Perhaps, they realize that they can’t keep shutting down society, but time to have the natural immunity at work, whether vaccinated or not.
I hope this post helped you understand the current situation with the new variant!
I will try to report more as I come across newer information.
Thanks for reading!
