Wondering what All Those Mean??
It is a metaphor about how chiropractic adjustment (The Good) can help pain (The bad) and prevent arthritis (The Ugly).
We looked at how the muscles in the neck work last week. This week, let’s find out how the facet joints work and how arthritis affects the spine. In this blog, I will share this video that illustrates the anatomy of the facet joints and discuss how chiropractic adjustments and care can help reduce the pain and prevents premature arthritis.
Before we move into viewing the video, I’d like to share a short but important anatomical concept about why and how chiropractic adjustment is helpful. The two joint facets on both sides of the vertebrae as shown in the picture, create a sort of “tripod” support with the disc in the center. As the facets move and function properly, all the weight load throughout the spinal column is evenly distributed and be able to maintain healthy ranges of motion. As the muscles and tendons, joints (facet) are having disruption due to tension, tightness, and pain, the balance in the “tripod” is broken. This can potentially lead to acute pain, muscle spasms, and sometimes disc herniations due to unhealthy load distribution on the spine. These problems can lead to a chronic degenerative process that eventually turns into arthritic conditions. Chiropractic adjustments will help the facet joints restore their ranges of motion and functions by helping the facet joints return to normal function and restore healthy weight load throughout the spine. Therefore, there will be fewer risks of muscles spasm, pain, disc herniations, and arthritis.
The spine is a very intricate and complex structure and it needs planned care and hygiene to be maintained properly. Physical trauma/injuries, lack of exercises, prolonged improper ergonomics/postures, repetitive trauma (improper lifting, bending) may result in acute pain and eventually lead to chronic pain and arthritis if not addressed properly.
Here are some important terms that are mentioned in the video
- Facet joints
- Joint capsules
- Facet cartilage
- Facet arthritis
