This Problem Can Hide in a Plain Sight!
And also cause a series of biomechanical issues such as the ankle, knee, hip, and back pain.
It is a collapsed arch aka “foot over-pronation.”
Although most of the patients with this condition do not realize how this can affect the rest of the body, it is much more common than one may think. The diagram on the right illustrates how it can work the way up to the upper part of the lower extremities and the spine.
Because of these connections, I routinely examine the patients’ feet and their current health. And more often than not, the patients improve their pain and dysfunctions in other areas when addressed properly for the problems in their feet.
By far the most common issue is the pronation of a foot or both feet. It can lead to other conditions such as plantar fasciitis, metatarsalgia, bunyons before starting to cause knee, hip, and spine problems. It will cause an excessive internal rotation of the knees which will, in turn, cause compensatory problems in the muscles and joints of hips and lumbopelvic joints. Unless it is addressed promptly, it will likely be subchronic or chronic issues that will be more difficult to manage in the future. Due to the ongoing stress to the adjacent structures, neighboring joints are likely to be degenerating or become arthritic prematurely.
Unfortunately, it is extremely difficult to bring the collapsed arch back. It is not only a musculoskeletal involvement, but it also is deeply neurological to maintain the dexterity and complexity of the balance and other activities that are supported by our feet.
The simplest and the most effective way to help this issue would be supporting the collapsed arches with orthotics. There are many different types of orthotics out there; from generic to custom, soft to hard, and so forth. Depending on the person’s problems, the types of orthotics that would work the best may also change. However, the advanced conditions with more challenging biomechanical issues may require custom ones. From what I have seen among my patients whom I fitted orthotics for the conditions that are related to pronation problems, most people respond positively with much-improved biomechanics both in symptoms and functions.
This video below nicely illustrates how orthotics work and help. Hope this will help you understand the connection explained above.
